What Is a Transvaginal Ultrasound?
A transvaginal ultrasound uses sound waves to take detailed pictures of the organs inside the pelvis.
It can show the uterus, ovaries, cervix, uterine lining and nearby pelvic structures.
A small ultrasound probe is gently placed inside the vagina to obtain detailed images that may not be seen as clearly from the outside of the body.

Using both methods can provide a more complete view of the pelvis.

For a Pelvic Complete ultrasound, you may need a full bladder for the first part of the examination.
- Drink 32 ounces of water about 1 hour before your appointment.
- Try not to empty your bladder before the abdominal part of the exam.
- You will usually be asked to empty your bladder before the transvaginal part.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
